Chelsea to hand Willy Caballero new deal with chiefs impressed by keeper’s handling of Kepa affair
Argentine veteran is out of contract in the summer but the club are ready to offer him a one-year extension
CHELSEA are set to reward Willy Caballero's professionalism by handing him a one-year contract extension.
The Blues want to tie the Argentina veteran down to another year after impressing following the Kepa Arrizabalaga saga.
Caballero was braced to come on for the penalty shootout in Chelsea's Carabao Cup final defeat against Man City before Kepa refused to come off the field.
He was then trusted with starting in goal for the 2-0 victory over Spurs in their following match.
The 37-year-old's contract expires this summer but according to the Telegraph, Chelsea will hand him a one-year extension if they can fill their home-grown quota.
Gary Cahill, Rob Green, Danny Drinkwater and Victor Moses are all heading for the exit door and the club will need to replace them with British players.
Caballero joined Chelsea in 2017 following three years at Man City and has been happy to play second fiddle.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will now need to decide whether he sticks with Caballero in goal for the trip to Fulham or starts with £71.6million Arrizabalaga.
When asked on his team selection, he said: "No not at the moment. I want to see our last two training sessions.
“Kepa is our first-choice goalkeeper. But we are very happy for Willy because now we know very well that he's able to play in a very difficult match. So I don't know: I'm sure that in one of the next two matches, Kepa will be on the pitch.”
