MANCHESTER UNITED have come up with a four-man list of targets this summer - including Ivan Rakitic and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
United are preparing to take a major plunge in the transfer market in the close season in order to deliver a squad capable of challenging for the title next year.
claim Rakitic and Wan-Bissaka have been earmarked as priority options, along with Kalidou Koulibaly and Milan Skriniar.
They say the quartet are all on the wanted list as executive vice-chairman and the board give their financial backing to a huge investment in players.
Beefing up the defensive quality appears to be the number one area of concern highlighted by interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Despite Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both signing new deals earlier this year, the lack of at least one top drawer centre-back has been a problem.
Napoli snubbed an approach for Koulibaly ahead of the January transfer window, with United prepared to pay as much as £95million for the 27-year-old.
But the Red Devils have not given up hope of landing him this summer and could even pay over £100m to persuade the Serie A club to finally sell the Senegal international.
Also high on their list of targets is Crystal Palace's Wan-Bissaka who has emerged as one of the most coveted young players in Europe this season.
The right-back has been tracked by a host of big clubs in England and abroad, but United have earmarked him to be a huge part of their future plans.
Antonio Valencia looks to be leaving Old Trafford and though Ashley Young still performs well, at 33 he does not have long left at the highest level.
Wan-Bissaka, 21, is viewed as a player who can not only slot in to the right of the defence, but also provide a major attacking threat as he bombs forward down the wing.
He is seen as a better long-term option than Diogo Dalot, who has taken time to adapt to the new regime under Solksjaer.
The centre of midfield is another area of concern for the United boss, as exposed when they were outplayed by Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.
That is why the club have earmarked a move for Barcelona star Rakitic to come in and provide some more quality both on and off the ball.
Barca are said to be open to the prospect of selling the 30-year-old this summer, and the chance to play at Old Trafford could tempt him to ignore interest from Inter Milan.
The Italian club are also in the sights of United in the shape of defender Skriniar, with the Slovakian a serious option if they fail to land top target Koulibaly.
