But such is Arsenal's current injury crisis that supporters are terrified the curse will strike again when they see the big hits come flying in.

A Gunners statement today said the club are "delighted" to be one of 17 host venues.

Underneath a tweet announcing the news, however, one person wrote: "Our players would get injured watching tbh [to be honest].";

But a fellow user was of a different opinion, posting: "Kolasinac should be included in that rugby league team."

One joked: "Arsenal’s back four might get a game with some of the ‘tackles’ they make."

A number of fans were furious their side were "pimping" their ground out.

And they used it as an excuse to attack miserly owner Stan Kroenke.

One wrote: ";It takes years of hard work to get a grass football pitch as good as the Emirates one and what do we do? Yes hold the Rugby League World Cup on it.

"You really could not make it up! Whose decision was that? Stan Kroenke? Are we that desperate for money now!"

A fellow user said simply: "More money for Kroenke to pocket."
Another by the name of Scratcher raged: "Rugby? FFS this stadium is far too good for rugby. Are we struggling so much to have to ‘pimp’ our stadium out?"

And one tweeted: "What next? Formula One on the perimeter? Embarrassing."
