The 33-year-old then told the arresting officer that he went through the door thinking it was a lift, according to the incident report released under the Freedom of Information Act.

It stated: "I approached the individual and asked what happened, and in his broken English he stated he went through the door at the bottom of the stairs because he thought it was a lift.

"Mr Rooney had strong odor of alcoholic beverage about his person, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet, and was not traveling with anyone.

"Mr Rooney was placed under arrest for public intoxication. Arrestee was unable to provide me his telephone number."

Arrest officer

Rooney was then brought before magistrates in Loudoun county, according to the incident report.

"Magistrate Thompson issued a misdemeanor warrant for Public Intoxication and ordered Mr Rooney held until sober," it added.

A new photo, showing Rooney looking pale and bleary eyed - taken shortly after the incident - was also released.

The reason for the arrest is given as "drunk in public" and the officer who responded, Cpl Spina of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, said he was responding to a report of somebody being in a secure area on December 16.

Rooney was later released and had to pay a $25 fine and $91 costs on January 4.

DISORIENTED DUE TO 'SLEEPING PILLS AND ALCOHOL'

The 33-year-old's spokesman said at the time he was "disorientated" after taking prescribed sleeping tablets and drinking on a flight.

In a statement, the spokesman said: "Wayne Rooney was arrested and detained at Dulles airport following a long flight from Saudi Arabia after a one-day promotional business trip.

"During the flight Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival.

";He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanor charge.

"He received a statutory automatic fine and was released shortly afterwards at the airport. The matter is now at an end.

"Wayne would like to put on record his appreciation for the manner he was treated by all involved."

ROONEY GETS THE HAIRDRYER

Rooney, had been in Saudi Arabia on December 15 for the Riyadh Formula E Grand Prix before returning to Cheshire for Christmas.

England's all-time leading scorer quit Everton to head to Major League Soccer club (MLS) DC United in June last year.

The arrest came after the former Man United player was arrested for drink driving in 2017 - when he was caught behind the wheel with party girl Laura Simpson in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Rooney said he let his family down after admitting being three times the limit when arrested - he had 104 micrograms of alcohol in his breath, the legal limit in the UK is 35 micrograms.

Following the incident, The Sun told how Rooney was given the hairdryer treatment by wife Coleen, 32.

She was said to have yelled down the phone at him: “How many times do you need to be told?”
