Kevin Campbell’s son Tyrese scores twice on Stoke debut but was still not enough to save Nathan Jones from defeat to Shrewsbury
Dad Kevin announced himself as an Arsenal star in the FA Cup 28 years ago and son Tyrese made a similar impact - only for new Potters boss Jones to taste defeat to League One Shrews
TEENAGE hitman Tyrese Campbell struck twice on his first start in senior football – almost 28 years after his famous dad Kevin made his mark for Arsenal in the FA Cup.
But Sam Ricketts' Shrewsbury wrecked the 19-year-old’s big night as they made beating Nathan Jones’ Potters’ look like child’s play with three second half goals.
The former Luton boss must have thought Stoke were safely through to the fourth round when he withdrew Campbell with 19 minutes remaining and his side two goals to the good.
Then his world fell apart as Ricketts' League One side battlers struck three goals in 10 minutes to underline why this job has turned into a poisoned chalice.
When James Bolton struck a screamer from 25 yards which crashed in off the joint of Adam Federici’s crossbar and post it looked like a late consolation.
But suddenly Stoke buckled and seven minutes later Sam Clucas sent Fejiri Okenhabirhie tumbling in the box with a mis-timed tackle to earn a stonewall penalty.
The forward sent Federici the wrong way from the spot and suddenly Stoke’s disbelieving fans realised their former Premier stars were about to bottle it and crash out of the cup.
Three minutes later they were proved right when Gregg Docherty’s low centre picked out Josh Laurent in front of goal and he had the simple task of tapping home from three yards to seal a famous win.
Furious Potters fans booed their team off the park just three days after they had done the same as Jones got off to a losing start at Brentford.
Yet it had all looked so promising in a first half in which Campbell looked to have wrapped up this tie with his first goals in senior football.
Latest Arsenal news
The 19-year-old Potters protégé proved anything ‘Pop,’ could do he could do better, opened his account two years before dad Kev, who was 21 when he nabbed his first FA Cup goal for George Graham’s Arsenal in a 2-1 win against Cambridge United in 1991.
Campbell junior not only got their quicker, he was even deadlier than dad as he grabbed two first half goals to double his dad’s return.
Campbell senior went on to enjoy a successful career with the Gunners, Nottingham Forest, Trabzonspor, Everton, West Brom and Cardiff City.
However the early signs are Campbell Mark II could be destined for even bigger things, especially in this Stoke side.
The kid may not just be the future for the Potters – he looks ready to stake his claim to lead the frontline now!
He opened the scoring after 20 minutes, running on to Charlie Adams’ through ball before chopping inside Mat Sadler to leave the Shrewsbury skipper sprawling as he lost his footing.
The kid kept his cool to slide the ball under Steve Arnold, and prompted his proud parent Kev to take to social media to Tweet: “Get in son!”
He was even happier as Tyrese added a spectacular second nine minutes before the break as he lashed home a brilliant right foot volleyafter Luke Waterfall had headed out Adam’s back post cross.
“He’s at it again! Proud of you son!” Tweeted Campbell senior.
If only the Potters fans could be as proud of the rest of their team!
