TROY DEENEY has been charged by the FA for his comments towards the referee following Watford's 3-3 draw with Bournemouth earlier this month.

The Hornets captain was left frustrated following a fiery contest that saw his side blow the lead twice to come away with a point.

In a game of many incidences, the 30-year-old singled out a decision following a challenge on Tom Cleverley by Dan Gosling.

Deeney told the BBC that the ref had "bottled it" after official David Coote brandished Gosling with just a yellow card.

He said: "You can't tell me their boy did not try to do Clevz (Cleverley). He knows it, they know it. Hence the reason for the reaction.

"I think the referee bottled on a few occasions. There's a handball right at the end.

"I'm not one to hammer refs, but he bottled it on a few occasions today.”

Standing next to Deeney in the interview, team-mate Ryan Fraser humorously raised his eyebrows in surprise after the striker's comments.

Deeney has until January 15 to respond to the charges.

An FA statement read: "Troy Deeney has been charged following post-match media comments he made about the appointed match referee for Watford’s game against Bournemouth on 2 January 2019. He has until 18:00 on 15 January 2019 to respond to the charge.”
