Allegri, 51, won two Serie A titles with Paul Pogba in his midfield and would be likely to build his team around the Frenchman.

Pogba - who has hit form since Jose Mourinho's sacking - thrived on the left of a midfield three at the Old Lady.

Nemanja Matic could offer reliable back-up in front of the defence, while Miralem Pjanic has been linked with United and would offer creativity.

Left-back has been an issue for several Old Trafford bosses which could be fixed by Alex Sandro, a long-term target for the club as well as rivals Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof would suit Allegri's patient style and Romelu Lukaku offers similar attributes to Mario Mandzukic.

Anthony Martial's recent form has shown what he is capable of down the flanks while Alexis Sanchez may finally come good given the right motivation.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won two in two and will hope to ensure Allegri never gets his hands on the role.

But the experienced tactician would bring plenty of pedigree to the post and is well capable of creating a dominant team given time.
