Solskjaer given £50m transfer kitty in Man Utd’s desperate bid to reach top four

The Norwegian has been tasked with unifying the dressing room, but he'll also be given funds in order to boost their defensive options

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER will be given a £50million pot for the January transfer window in a bid to save Manchester United's blushes.

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is prepared to make the cash available for next month's transfer window for the right players.

Woodward recognises the need to boost the squad if they're to compete for a Champions League spot and according to the Mirror has set aside the funds in order to do so.

The club's list of defensive targets has been growing for months, Jose Mourinho was desperate to improve the back line at United and it looks like the club will spend money to fill their void.

Solskjaer will be heavily involved in the decisions regarding players arriving at Old Trafford in January, but he's got to get his house in order first.

The top five defenders on United's wishlist would put their current defender's positions in the squad in jeopardy, but it seems the club are ready to make spots more competitive.

Fiorentina's Nikola Milenkovic was on Mourinho's radar but would swallow all of United's £50million pot of cash.

Whereas highly-rated Greece international Kostas Manolas would leave room for change, as Roma are reported to have placed a £31million price tag on him.

West Ham's Declan Rice, who can play centre-half or defensive midfield, has been hailed as the best young player at the London club thanks to his recent form and would only cost United £25million.

Kalidou Koulibaly caught Mourinho's eye, thanks to his impressive performance in the Champions League.

But the Napoli defender would blow the budget, as the 27-year-old is expected to cost £95million.

United have also made it clear that they're interested in Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld.

The 29-year-old was targeted by United in the summer, but they may go back again with a £25million bid now that Solskjaer is in charge.

Despite his moaning about not being given enough funds, Mourinho wasn't exactly restricted on what he could spend while he was in charge.

But some of his purchases now seem questionable, particularly the expensive bench-warmer Alexis Sanchez.

After two-and-a-half years under Mourinho, Solskjaer has his work cut out and has been asked to unify United's dressing room, play attacking football and get the best out of players such as Paul Pogba.

Fans were relieved when a video emerged of Solskjaer screaming at his players for not attempting to score, which, of course, is very different to the Special One's park-the-bus style of play.

Solskjaer arrived at United’s AON Training Complex in the early house of this morning, with a plan to imitate Sir Alex Ferguson.
