On the weekend, SunSport reported that the departing Old Trafford chief would receive the eye-watering sum of £24million if he was to be sacked within 45 days.

The figure is so high as the tactician signed a new contract with the Manchester club in January that would keep him at the club until 2020.

Michael Carrick will now take the reigns at Manchester United but the club are set to look externally for a caretaker manager in the wake of Mourinho's departure.

The former England midfielder will lead training this week but is not being considered to take charge in the interim.

Carrick was installed as Mourinho's No.2 in the summer after 12 years as a player at Old Trafford.
