Manchester United player ratings: Romelu Lukaku shocking once again, while Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof impress in 3-1 defeat
Jose Mourinho chose to park the bus in the second half with the game at 1-1, as the Red Devils invited pressure
MANCHESTER UNITED were blown away by Liverpool at Anfield as Jose Mourinho’s men failed to deal with the relentless attacks from the home side.
Going into the break at 1-1, the Special One’s decision to park the bus backfired as his side invited pressure from Jurgen Klopp’s side, and offered nothing going forward.
Here’s our verdict on how the United players got on.
David De Gea
Could do nothing for the goals he conceded, with Liverpool’s last two being deflected off his team-mates.
Matteo Darmian
Somehow lasted the whole 90 minutes, constantly chasing Liverpool players to no avail.
Surely heading out the Old Trafford door next summer. Simply not good enough.
Eric Bailly
A late change in the starting XI for Chris Smalling, the Ivorian looked composed and assured, but was often left exposed.
Deflected Xherdan Shaqiri’s second past De Gea, but was one of United’s better players.
Victor Lindelof
Put in a stellar display at the back and showed why many consider him to be the club’s best defender.
Was strong in the air and the ground, and frustrated the Reds front-line on a number of occasions.
Diogo Dalot
Despite impressing of late for United, he looked well out of his depth and was constantly being beaten by Sadio Mane.
The occasion got the better of the Portuguese youngster, and he was rightfully hauled off at half-time for Marouane Fellaini.
Ander Herrera
Was bossed in the midfield by Naby Keita, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho, and was completely overrun.
Dived in unnecessarily for Liverpool’s second as Mane skiped past him, before firing in a low cross that led to Shaqiri’s first strike.
Nemanja Matic
United fans must be wondering how he keeps starting every single week, looks a shadow of the player he once was at United.
The Serbian looked like a lost boy in the middle of the pitch as he wandered around, as he failed to help out his defence.
Ashley Young
Caught out awfully for Liverpool’s opener as he let Mane run clear past him as he volleyed past De Gea.
Made a number of vital challenges and blocks in the second half, before he deflected Shaqiri’s effort into the back of the net.
Jesse Lingard
Showed his sharpness with his goal after Alisson fumbled his catch, and was always helping out the defence.
Marcus Rashford
Looked the most dangerous United player as he often led the counter-attacks for his side.
Proved to be a constant threat when on the ball, and put in a number of teasing crosses.
Romelu Lukaku
Failed to repay his manager’s faith as he was chosen to lead the line, but once again, was average in attack, and awful in his hold up play.
Delivered the cross that got United back on level terms, but his delivery only fell to Lingard after Alisson fluffed his catch.
Substitutes
Marouane Fellaini
Brought on to stop Liverpool’s midfield from dominating and slow the tempo of the game down, the Belgian was a mere passenger for the second half.
Offered nothing in attack, and barely helped the defence, it was a nightmare return to Merseyside for the towering midfielder.
Anthony Martial
Brought on in the 78th minute and tasked with injecting a spark, Martial was involved in a few nice plays as he looks to get himself into starting XI contention.
Juan Mata
Chucked on with the match already lost in the latter stages, he hardly got involved in the play with his side looking defeated as he replaced Lingard.
