Reading have lost ten and won just four out of their opening 20 league games, with their recent 2-2 draw at home to Stoke proving to be Clement's last match.

The 46-year-old replaced Jaap Stam on a three-year deal at the end of March, where he steered the club to safety following a difficult season.

But following another disastrous start to the campaign, Reading have announced they have terminated his contract.

A said: "Following five wins in the first 22 league and cup matches of 2018-19, owners Mr Yongge Dai and Ms Xiu Li Dai have made the difficult decision that the time is now right to make a change.

"We would like to thank Paul for his hard work during his time as manager of Reading Football Club and we wish him the very best of luck in his future endeavours.

"CEO Nigel Howe will now seek to swiftly identify and appoint a new manager who will fit the Reading mould, build a team which can deliver performances and results that will help us climb the Championship table and lead the club towards promotion in the future.

"The club will make no additional comment at this time but will provide further updates as soon as possible."

Clement becomes the fourth managerial casualty in the second division this season, with Steve Bruce, Paul Hurst and Dean Smith all getting the boot.

It is the third time Clement has been sacked in his career, having last just 33 games in charge of Derby.

While he was also fired from Swansea in December last year with the Welsh side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
