The 33-year-old centre-back converted a penalty in the 71st minute as the Swedes go second in Group B2 to relegate Turkey

ANDREAS GRANQVIST fired in a second half penalty as Sweden beat Turkey 1-0 to keep their hopes of promotion from Group B of the Uefa Nations League alive.

The veteran defender rifled in his spot-kick in the 71st minute into the bottom left corner to send the Scandinavian nation up to second place - relegating Turkey in the process.

Janne Andersson's side now have to beat Russia on Tuesday to determine which country will move up to Group A.

Turkey - who have picked up just three points from their games - started off the match at Konya Buyuksehir Stadi brightly.

Roma winger Cengiz Under almost broke the deadlock in the opening minute, but his effort from distance was well saved by Robin Olsen.

And Hakan Calhanoglu then went close minutes later, but he couldn't his strike down, before the AC Milan ace again threatened in the 13th minute.

Sweden then grew into the game, with Martin Ollson and Jakob Johansson threatening for the visitors.

A frantic start to the second half saw both teams squander a host of key opportunities, and it was Turkey who would rue their missed chances.

Celta Vigo midfielder Okay Yokuslu was the man who conceded the penalty - and up stepped the ex-Wigan man to nestle his strike into the side netting.

Granqvist also scored for Sweden from the spot against South Korea at the World Cup in Russia.

Turkey had no answers after going 1-0 down, leaving Sweden's hopes of promotion in their own hands.
