And the DC United star looked to be in fine fettle as he rolled up at St George’s with his mini suitcase in tow.

Rooney received a rapturous welcome from all at England’s training centre.

And he was followed in by Bournemouth striker Wilson, who has been called up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the first time after a blistering start to the Premier League season.

Also hoping to get his chance at impressing is former Man City youngster Sancho, who has become a key member of the Borussia Dortmund team that beat Bayern Munich 3-2 at the weekend to go clear at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Current hero Harry Kane was also present as the usual faces rocked up, meaning England had three different ‘generations’ of strikers in one place at the same time.

Whether Rooney starts against the USA remains to be seen, with many expecting him to come on for around 15 to 20 minutes instead.

But he looked lively as he joined in training for the first time on a chilly night, easily settling back into the routine of things after retiring from international duty a year ago.

Rooney is England’s all-time record goalscorer and is also their second-most capped player, and earlier today his wife Coleen hit out at naysayers including Paul Ince, who reckon the veteran’s brief return is making a mockery of the beautiful game.
