Young, 33, is braced to enter his eighth year at the club having enjoyed a spell in the first-team under Jose Mourinho.

The former Aston Villa and Watford man has started eight league matches this season and twice in the Champions League.

BBC Football Reporter Simon Stone revealed: “Ashley Young in talks with @ManUtd over one-year contract extension.

“Early days but signs are there will be a positive conclusion.”

But it appears Red Devils supporters have seen enough and believe it’s time for the club to move on from their ageing players.

One furious fan commented: “Pep came in and got rid of the deadwood straight away we’re catering for has-beens.”

Another raged: “And yet… we just keep rewarding mediocrity! Sure give him a pay rise while we are at it!”

One more supporter added: “This is why we are where we are. Extending players contracts who should have left the club years ago!!”

Young, who was handed the captain’s armband in the 3-1 defeat at Man City, was forced to defend his side’s performance at the Etihad.

United were ripped apart at times and the gulf in class was evident as United slipped 12 points behind their rivals.

He wrote on Twitter: “A really disappointing end to a week of tough away games.

“We know what yesterday meant to our fans and rest assured that during the international break we’ll be doing everything to make sure it’s 3 points next time out at Old Trafford.”
