UNAI EMERY has confirmed Arsenal star Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on a broken ankle.
The 27-year-old striker suffered the devastating injury in Thursday’s Europa League stalemate against Sporting Lisbon.
Ex-Manchester United forward Welbeck now looks set to miss the rest of the season after going under the knife.
Gunners boss Emery provided an update on the England international after Sunday’s draw with Wolves.
The Frenchman said: "He had an operation on Friday.
“It's a big injury but the outcome (on whether he can return this season) the doctor can answer that better than me.”
It is a huge blow for Welbeck, who is still waiting to discover whether he will be offered a new deal at the club.
His current contract expires next June and he could walk away for nothing.
But the injury is a bitter setback to his bargaining power as he prepares for the months of rehabilitation ahead.
Welbeck has scored five times in 14 appearances for the North London club this season.
