Things didn't start well for Barca as they went behind in the 20th minute to a Juan Firpo goal.

Betis then doubled their lead 15 minutes later through Sanchez Rodriguez.

But Messi pulled one back for the hosts with a penalty in the 68th minute as Barca turned up the pressure.

However, the Argentine ace was left pulling his hair out when Giovani Lo Celso restored Betis' two-goal lead just moments later.

Ex-Bayern Munich star Arturo Vidal came off the bench to make it 3-2 with ten minutes remaining.

But like Messi before, he saw his strike cancelled out soon after when former Real Madrid man Sergio Canales fired one past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Ivan Rakitic saw red after collecting a second yellow card as time ticked down.

And Barca gave themselves the cruellest of endings when Messi netted a second in the 92nd minute, leaving themselves no time to grab an equaliser.
