England star set to sign new contract to keep him at the Etihad until 2023 and is also set to open his own academy
RAHEEM STERLING has verbally agreed to sign a new Manchester City contract - and also has plans to open a football academy.
City have made a breakthrough in talks with the England forward over a deal to take him to 2023 with wages that could land him £300,000 per week including bonuses.
Sterling, 23, is set to complete the formalities of the deal when there is time to physically sign the paperwork.
His £180,000-a-week deal will get boosted by £100,000 following a successful round of contract talks and could land him £300,000 per week if targets are met.
He follows a raft of England stars including Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Dele Alli to agree fresh deals this season.
And it will end interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the ex-Liverpool forward, with his future committed to City.
Sterling has also been planning for his long-term future and wants to open an academy in his hometown London.
He was born in Jamaica but moved to England at five and grew up in Wembley, which is illustrated by a tattoo of the stadium on his arm.
After starting at QPR he moved to Anfield where he broke into senior football and earned a £49million move to the Etihad in 2015.
But it was not until last season that the winger showed what he is truly capable of in a Manchester City shirt.
Not only did City runaway with the Premier League title, Sterling also scored a phenomenal 23 goals as he blossomed under Pep Guardiola.
And although City broke their transfer record to bring in Riyad Mahrez from Leicester for £60million this summer, Sterling has remained a key player.
The pair combined excellently on Monday night as the former Liverpool star set up the Algerian for the only goal of City's win against Tottenham.
Sterling broke his three-year England goal drought with his sublime double against Spain in October and sorting his contractual issues will be welcome news for City fans.
