Stephan Lichtsteiner becomes oldest player to score for Arsenal in more than EIGHT years against Blackpool
Veteran defender's first goal for the Gunners means no player as old as him as netted for the club since Sol Campbell in 2010
STEPHAN LICHTSTEINER became the oldest player to score for Arsenal in eight years against Blackpool.
Gunners boss Unai Emery had sent out a team of young guns for the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Blackpool.
But it was the experience of Swiss veteran Lichtsteiner who turned up trumps early on when he fired Arsenal into a first-half lead against the League One side.
Emery had snapped up the defender from Juventus in the summer largely to provide a calming influence in what has long been a shaky back-line at the Emirates.
But at the ripe old age of 34 years 288 days, Lichtsteiner found himself in the right place at the right time to touch home from close range to put the Premier League side ahead.
And in doing so he became the oldest player to have scored a goal for Arsenal since Sol Campbell.
The former England defender was 35 years 152 days when he netted a Champions League goal against Porto back in 2010.
