TOTTENHAM are planning for life after Toby Alderweireld by lining up a £25million move for Sampdoria’s Danish defender Joachim Andersen.
The centre-back, 22, is getting rave reviews in Serie A and is seen by Spurs as the long-term replacement for Alderweireld, who is out of contract next summer and who has been linked with a move to various clubs.
Andersen has represented his country’s Under-21 side three times, but is yet to be called up to the senior squad.
He will not sign a new deal at Sampdoria and hopes to force through a move in January.
He has only 18 months of his deal to run, so Tottenham will test the waters at well below the £25m valuation.
Sampdoria lost midfield maestro Lucas Torreira to Spurs' rivals Arsenal in the summer, and look poised to offload another fans favourite to North London.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed after his side's win against West Ham that he is keen to refresh his squad in the winter transfer window.
He said: "In football you always need to think you can improve and you need to try to improve your squad.
"If you say to me we were so clever because we didn't sign anyone, and now after nine games it's the best ever start in Premier League for the club, I'm not going to be that type of person who is going to say 'yes we are geniuses'.
"We wanted to sign people. But the circumstances arrived, and it's the best start in the Premier League for Tottenham.

"Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe it's because we are geniuses. But in January we are going to try to sign players.
"Today we can say 'well done' but if you ask me if I'm happy, yes I'm happy with the result but I think you cannot play with destiny, you need to build the team properly.
"We need as a club in January to try to refresh the squad to move the club on."
One potential recruit could be Blackburn star Bradley Dack, with the claiming scouts have watched the ex-Gillingham ace in action this season.
