PAUL POGBA has taken too much flak for Manchester United's poor performance, according to his international side's captain.
The pair may be rivals in the Premier League, but Hugo Lloris has put that aside and has stood up for his French team-mate.
Pogba may have triumphed in Russia, but himself admits that he did lose focus after winning the World Cup.
But Lloris thinks his drop in focus is being blamed for United's current form and for sitting in eight place.
Speaking at a , he said: "I'm sorry but I don't watch all Manchester United games.
"But he [Paul Pogba] has a status in the UK, maybe because of his huge transfer fee.
"Sometimes people judge him not very fairly. Now he has more maturity, he knows what he needs to do, he proves that with us."
Pogba referred to lifting the World Cup with his country as a feeling of 'touching the stars' and said it is 'the best trophy you can win as a footballer'.
But, for France he is able to lead his team without being a captain, which is something he struggles with at United.
Lloris added:"I think his performances at United are far from being as bad as people say.
"He is part of a team that have worse results that what we could have expected, that's for sure, but they are still a very strong team.
"When it matters, he is there. "
Perhaps Lloris was referring to Pogba's rallying calls in the changing room during United's victory over Newcastle, where Mourinho listened to the French star's tactics.
Pogba's passion for football seems to have somewhat dwindled at United, under Jose Mourinho, but for France he shows flare.
During his country's clash with Iceland, Pogba was left reeling after team-mate Kylian Mbappe was clinically hacked down and stormed onto the pitch to confront his opponents and referee.
Whereas he doesn't appear to put the same shift in for the Red Devils, which has led to Paul Scholes labelling him cocky.
The United legend said: "Pogba does some of the best things in games, a great pass, dribble, or touch.
"Then, five minutes later, he'll do one of the worst things like his brain has switched off, like it's all about him because he's just shown everyone how good he is.
"That becomes easy to play against because you know that cockiness will come.
"We never saw that at Juventus, but he was a smaller fish there."
Lloris, however, seems to think his compatriot is being unfairly judged.
He isn't the only French star to stick up for one of their own.
N'Golo Kante spoke about wanting to see one of the French side lift the Ballon d'Or this year, thanks to their World Cup success.
