The French World Cup winner was fined £50,000 and banned from the road for 20 months after pleading guilty.

Lloris told : “It is pretty tricky and embarrassing.

“This is not the image I want to give, but mistakes happen. It must not affect me as a man. It does not change who I am or the professional that I am.

“I have always devoted everything to football and respected what you have to do off the field.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino told Lloris he will keep the armband and begged critics not to “play God” by judging the French World Cup winner.

Poch said: “He apologised to everyone — us, the staff, the fans — and he said ‘any decision that you take gaffer, or the club, I think is fair’.

“We had a conversation and he explained what happened.

“He already knew in the moment that it was a big mistake.

“He said ‘gaffer it’s a massive lesson for me. I made a mistake and now I need to pay’. Like a man that he is he is going to accept everything.

"Of course all people can make a mistake and now it is a massive lesson for him, a life lesson.

“He is the first to regret everything and he doesn’t feel great.

“He made a mistake and he’s suffered the punishment. He has punished himself.

“We are not God, we can’t judge people. Only we need to try to make sure that he understands that it was a mistake.

“That is a massive lesson for everyone. But he is clever, he will learn and now he is going to move on.”

It is understood Spurs fined Lloris, 31, two weeks wages — around £300,000.

Lloris was stopped after a night out in London’s West End last month when his £65,000 Porsche ran a red light and nearly hit parked cars.
