Casey Stoney's side remain unbeaten in the Championship as Charlton fall to their first defeat of the season in Manchester
MANCHESTER UNITED WOMEN continue their domination in the Women’s Championship this season.
The Red Devils comfortably beat Charlton Women 3-0 at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium to keep their spot at the top of the table.
Casey Stoney’s side started strongly with Amy Turner and Zelem having early chances to get the hosts on the scoreboard.
Charlton struggled to get keep possession and after 15 minutes, it was Zelem who found the back of net with a strong strike.
United thought they had a second when Kirsty Hanson got on the end of Alex Greenwood’s whipped in cross but it was ruled offside by the officials.
Despite hardly getting out of their half, Charlton had a chance to even the score line against the run of play.
With just minutes of the first half left on the clock, Gemma Bryan – who joined the club over the summer from Crystal Palace – sent a cross into Elizabeta Ejupi but her header hit the crossbar for the visitors.
Charlton came out for the second half looking better set up but the hosts continued to press up front.
Just before the hour mark, United doubled their lead after both Lizzie Arnot and Sigsworth hit the bar within a matter of minutes.
Sigsworth waited for the ball to come down and volleyed the ball past the keeper to the far post and in.
With 15 minutes to go, the hosts secured the three points after Arnot got on the end of Charlton keeper Katie Startup’s block.
Siobhan Chamberlain had a quiet afternoon in the United net following her shock call-up to the England squad over the international break.
The result sees United remain unbeaten in the league and Stoney’s side have failed to let a single goal in so far this season.
