Gareth Southgate agrees new four-year contract as England manager worth £12million

GARETH SOUTHGATE has agreed the terms of a new £12m contract, taking him through to the 2022 World Cup.

The Three Lions chief has been rewarded for the summer run to the World Cup semi-finals.

Southgate’s current deal was due to run out after Euro 2020.

But FA chief executive Martin Glenn was determined to secure Southgate’s services for the long haul, backing the former England defender to continue to develop what was the second-youngest team in Russia.

Southgate initially played hard to get, hinting that he might not want to stay on after the next European Championships.

The manager’s bargaining position was helped by the FA awareness of the likely departure of technical director Dan Ashworth, who has now confirmed he is leaving St George’s Park for a similar role at Brighton.

And in the end the lure of taking England to another World Cup, and the security of a two and a half year contract extension, has seen Southgate accept the new terms.

It is understand the new deal will be worth a minimum of £3m per year, with substantial performance-related bonus clauses.

That represents a significant hike from his current contract - believed to be worth up to £2.5m per year - although nowhere near the amount earned by top Prem bosses such as Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino.

While the basic terms of the new contract have been agreed between Southgate and the FA top brass, they still have to be signed off.

Today’s meeting of the 10-man FA board is expected to give its approval without much debate, especially with the the search now on for Ashworth’s replacement.

That will not be the end of the matter with other legal requirements nand sign-offs needed and it is anticipated the new deal will not be officially announced until next week.

But there is no appetite in the FA to delay with a belief that making such a clear public commitment to Southgate now will only serve to strengthen the feel-good mood around the England side, despite the opening Nations League defeat by Spain.
