Italy’s anti-doping agency Nado Italia claims Rossi, 31, will stand trial next week after testing positive for eye drug, Dorzolamide.

The drug can reportedly be used as a masking agent.

The test was taken in May while now out-of-contract Rossi played for Genoa at the end of the last Serie A season.

The anti-doping prosecutor is seeking a one-year ban.

Dorzolamide, the substance that Rossi tested positive for, is not banned when administered with eye drops.

But Rossi told anti-doping authorities he did not use eye drops when he was questioned twice, in June and July.

Rossi is yet to comment on the latest revelations.

The American-born Italian spent three years at Man United to kick-off his career - but played just 14 times in all competitions.

Rossi found his feet at La Liga side Villarreal between 2007 and 2013, but has since seen his career plagued by injuries and is now a free agent.
