Totti scored over 300 goals in nearly 800 appearances during his many years in the Italian capital.

But he could now return to football after receiving an offer from APIA, who have strong ties with the ASR Football academy in Sydney – an affiliate of Roma’s.

An ASR representative confirmed: “An offer has been put forward as we’ve got Giuseppe Giannini coming over for the game.

“The club is trying to make something special happen, we’ve put in an offer and now we’re waiting to see if that offer will be taken up.

“The club is taking the initiative and we’re hoping we can build something on the links we already have.”

Totti isn’t the only Italian who could be set to return to action Down Under, with Andrea Pirlo also being targeted by Avondale FC.

The playmaker was an international teammate of Totti’s and has received an offer to play again in Australia.

An Avondale spokesperson said: “We can only comment that we are waiting to hear from [Pirlo’s] management.”
