The reason Jorginho snubbed Man City to join Chelsea this summer despite Etihad deal being agreed
Jorginho has impressed for his new club this season, playing in every match as Chelsea head into the international break with four wins from four
JORGINHO has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Chelsea – but it all could have been so different.
The midfielder was set to join Manchester City in the summer with personal terms agreed between the club and the Italian midfielder.
But although a deal was struck between Manchester City and Jorginho, the player’s agent said the champions failed to secure a deal with former side Napoli.
It meant that the transfer was held up and allowed Chelsea to hijack the move.
And when the Blues finally hired former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri as the new manager on July 14, they signed Jorginho on the same day.
Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos said: “It was all done with Jorginho.
“There was an agreement, but there was no agreement between the clubs. All parties have to agree, and one did not.
“Then Chelsea asked what the situation was after Sarri arrived and Jorginho went to London.
“He’s really enjoying it at Chelsea, the team is on a roll and has won four matches out of four. It’s a great start.
“Going to Chelsea was a unique opportunity, the career of a player is very short and now we hope for the best.”
And Santos is right, the team is definitely on a roll and a large part of that is due to the influence Jorginho has had on Sarri’s new-look side, in which the Italian has played every minute.
The 26-year-old scored on his Premier League debut with a cool penalty and has impressed in every game, allowing N’Golo Kante to enjoy more freedom going forward.
He is currently preparing to kick-start Italy’s Uefa Nations League campaign under new manager Roberto Mancini against Poland as they look to bounce back from their World Cup qualification embarrassment.
