Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino ‘never considered’ stripping Hugo Lloris of captaincy after drink-drive charge
MAURICIO POCHETTINO says he "never considered" stripping Hugo Lloris of the Spurs' captaincy after his drink-drive charge.
France's World Cup-winning goalkeeper was taunted by Manchester United supporters during Tottenham's 3-0 win at Old Trafford last night.
He spent seven hours in custody during the early hours of last Friday morning after failing a roadside breathalyser test at 2.20am in central London.
But Lloris made one important save to deny Romelu Lukaku and enjoyed a relatively simple night between the sticks on his first game back since being charged.
Spurs have said they will deal with Lloris, 31, internally and he has apologised for his actions.
Pochettino is adamant he did not once think of taking the armband away from him.
He said: "No, I never considered [stripping him of the captaincy]. What happened was such a bad experience for him.
"He feels so sorry. He apologised to everyone, but not only apologised to our fans, us, the club and he shows his regret and apologised to the whole country, because that responsibility is massive.
"I think it was a good lesson for everyone, a massive lesson.
"He's punishing himself.
"He feels so sorry and so bad because he knows that he made a big mistake, but in the same way I think he's a man out of character.
"We are going to, of course, support him but knowing that we cannot justify, of course.
"There's no sense to take some decision like you told me."
United supporters chanted at Lloris: "He's still on the p***, he's still on the p***, Hugo Lloris, he's still on the p***."
But it did not affect his concentration, or that of Spurs as a whole, with Harry Kane's header and then Lucas Moura's double sealing the thumping win - Jose Mourinho's biggest loss at home in his career.
