But Gascoigne, 51, took to Twitter to reassure fans - explaining that he had taken sleeping tablets the night before and was still feeling the effects.

He tweeted: "Ha just read some of the tweets some say I’m looking well others say it’s the best they’ve seen me and others are saying i was drunk it’s every time I’m doing well that’s ok I been taking sleeping tablets to try kip that all love GAZZA xxxx".

Gazza had earlier joked around with TV personality Fenners - pulling out of a high five before giving him a hug.

Viewers claimed the former Tottenham and Lazio superstar looked uncomfortable on the sofa towards the end of his appearance.

But his segment in the garden was praised by supporters who were glad to see him sharing a laugh with Fenners.

Three Lions icon Gazza flew out to support Gareth Southgate's squad in their World Cup semi-final against Croatia.

He famously cried after England crashed out at the same stage in 1990 and wanted the new crop to surpass his achievement.

But the game ended in similar heartbreak as Luka Modric inspired his side to an extra-time win.

Croatia were beaten by France in the final while the English lost to Belgium as they went for third.
