Bacary Sagna launches scathing attack on ex-Arsenal team-mates and reveals he quit because they got ‘too comfortable’
French defender spent seven seasons with the Gunners before he joined Manchester City in 2014
BACARY SAGNA has launched a scathing attack on his ex-Arsenal team-mates for getting "too comfortable".
The French defender, 35, claimed the lack of ambition led to his decision to join Manchester City in 2014.
Sagna made over 200 appearances for the Gunners during his seven-year stint in North London.
But speaking about his time with Arsenal, he told : "Arsenal's players got too comfortable. That is the reason why I left the club.
"At a given point in your career you need to get out of that comfort zone if you want to go forward.
"If you revel in that type of routine you risk losing everything.
"Arsenal have everything they need to be successful. They are based in London and have superb facilities and a great stadium.
"But the players need to show more desire out on the pitch.
"Arsenal can beat anybody. But in recent times they have been capable of the worst performances alongside the best.
"A page has turned, and Emery is the right choice to bring the club on.
"He dealt with severe pressure at Paris Saint-Germain, and he will have a similar situation at Arsenal.
"Everyone will expect him to rebuild the club in a hurry."
Sagna claims Emery is the right man for the job, but believes that Arsene Wenger deserved more respect from the fans.
He said: "The fans went too far with Arsene.
"He made them proud for 21 years, then some of them hired planes to fly banners calling his resignation during matches.
"He built the club and developed English football.
"He had a difficult year, and people celebrated when he announced he was leaving. I was surprised.
"But the fans should have been more grateful for what he did for the club."
Sagna has now joined MLS outfit Montreal Impact on a three-month deal after a short stint with Benevento.
