Manchester United fail in ambitious Diego Godin swoop with Atletico Madrid defender having staggeringly low £18m release clause

MANCHESTER UNITED have failed in an audacious move for Diego Godin in their desperate struggle for defensive reinforcements.
Incredibly, the Uruguayan defender has a staggeringly low £18million release clause at Atletico Madrid despite being considered one of the best centre-backs on the planet.
SunSport understands Manchester United offered Godin an £8m-a-year package earlier this week... but the South American turned it down to stay in Spain.
Godin, 32, is instead set to sign a new deal with Atletico when his release clause will almost certainly dramatically increase.
Jose Mourinho, desperate for reinforcements, appears to have failed in bids to land Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Harry Maguire this summer.
Godin - also a transfer target for Serie A giants Juventus this summer - has been the backbone of Diego Simeone's solid squads for the past few years.
With close pal Antoine Griezmann re-signing and in-demand Thomas Lemar joining, it's unlikely Godin would want to leave Atleti now - despite their Champions League horror show last season.
Despite the rumours of Godin to United swirling, Mourinho earlier announced he would be making no more moves this summer.
Despite only signing Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant this summer, the Special One claimed his summer is over.
Asked if there would be any signings, Mourinho said: "The information I have is no. I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today."
