MANCHESTER CITY'S World Cup stars are set to cut their summer holidays short and return to training this week.

Seven of Pep Guardiola's squad were still involved in the tournament in Russia on the final weekend.

That includes four of Gareth Southgate's England squad - plus Benjamin Mendy, Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany.

Most of them were offered the chance to take three weeks off following a hectic season.

But Guardiola says most of his players will be back before the Community Shield against Chelsea next Sunday.

And they are keen to get started and help City with their Premier League title defence.

He said: "Most of them are coming back. We have just four or five days to prepare for the Community Shield.

“We have to adapt. Some of them are coming back before, some are coming back after the final.

"We need players for the final but if they are not coming back we'll play with the guys who are here.

"It is not an ideal situation, we prefer to be together but it is the same for Niko Kovac or for the other managers - the calendar is the calendar so we have to adapt.

"We have made one pre-season and now we need another pre season before the start of the season.

"I would prefer for them to come back as soon as possible but it is not possible."

Kyle Walker, John Stones, Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph all played for the Three Lions in Russia.
