The former Hammers favourite has been offered to them, less than two years after orchestrating a bitter transfer to Marseille.
Payet had eggs thrown at his windows and was verbally abused by fans when he demanded a move in January 2017 with the club in a relegation battle.
The free-kick wizard is now 31 and French giants Marseille want to offload him due to financial pressures.
West Ham’s top brass may be willing to do business and new boss Manuel Pellegrini has canvassed the squad about it.
With playmaker Manuel Lanzini out all next season with a cruciate ligament injury, Payet’s technical skills would provide a creative force for the team in his absence.

Payet was a sensation for West Ham after signing from Marseille for £11.5m in the summer of 2015.
He scored 11 league goals in less than 50 games — with many of them spectacular set-pieces which made him a fan hero.
But they turned on Payet when he told then manager Slaven Bilic he wanted out and would even fake injury so he did not have to play for the club again.
As well as his house being targeted, the fans sang anti-Payet songs and daubed graffiti on the walls near the club’s ground.
The Hammers reluctantly sold him back to Marseille for £25m and last term he helped them reach the Europa League final, which they lost to Atletico Madrid.
However, it is Payet’s wage demands that could yet prove a stumbling block.
