But the 24-year-old looks set to stay after Lyon released a statement claiming negotiations had collapsed.

It read: "Transfer negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir have not succeeded and Olympique Lyonnais has decided to put an end to this negotiation tonight."

French football chief Noel Le Graet claimed earlier today that the 24-year-old completed his medical at Clairefontaine.

And Jurgen Klopp was hoping to push the deal through before Fekir begins his World Cup campaign with France.

An article on the club website read: “Although Liverpool have been the priority of a possible transfer of Nabil, and subject to other proposals consistent with the interest of Nabil and Olympique Lyonnais and from ambitious clubs.
