ENGLAND UNDER-21S face an anxious 24 hours as they wait to discover their Toulon Tournament fate.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side thrashed Qatar 4-0 tonight in Southern France but that was not enough to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The game began slowly before the Young Lions broke the deadlock as Ahmed Suhail diverted a Lukas Nmecha header past his own goalkeeper.

It remained the same at the break, but knowing they needed four more goals to usurp Mexico on goal difference for top spot, England flew out traps after the restart.

Leeds United’s Ronaldo Vieira thundered home a second from outside the area to double the advantage.

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham then added a third by tapping in at the back post following good work down the left by Jay DaSilva and Adam Armstrong.

Newcastle forward Armstrong, who spoke exclusively to SunSport yesterday in the build-up to the clash, made it four with 15 minutes remaining.

Needing just one more goal to seal a place in the last four, the Young Lions piled the pressure on the Qatari defence.

Middlesbrough’s Dael Fry came closest to grabbing a fifth, but the goalkeeper produced a stirring late display to keep Boothroyd’s men at bay.

Now England have to wait for Saturday’s results to see if they finish as one of the best three teams in the second spot in their respective groups.
