GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM has revealed why Liverpool's players did not imediately head off to console Loris Karius after his horror show in the Champions League final.

The German's two shocking errors handed Real Madrid the trophy on a plate, after the Reds had made a solid start and squared the tie at 1-1.

But Karius' double blunder came either side of Gareth Bale's sublime overhead kick, and the 24-year-old slumped to the ground after the final whistle as the magnitude of his errors sank in.

Liverpool's players were criticised on social media as the first players to console Karius appeared to be wearing the white of Real Madrid.

Players and staff from the defeated Reds did go over and lend a reassuring arm after a few minutes, but the Dutch midfielder admitted he found the result "hugely frustrating."

Wijnaldum said: "I didn't say anything because a lot of people already went to him and sometimes you don't like it when too many people come.

"It's not the ending we wanted for our Champions League campaign but sometimes these things happen in football.

"It is hugely frustrating and we can't change it."

Liverpool were impressive for the opening half hour of the tie in Kiev, making inroads along the flanks through full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But after Mo Salah went off injured after half an hour, Jurgen Klopp's side were pegged back.

Wijnaldum added: "It is always difficult to say what we can do, it depends on so many different things as to how we do next season.

"I have confidence. We have learned a lot this season, we learned a lot the season before so hopefully we can achieve great things.";
