Uefa refuse to sell Liverpool fans Real Madrid’s unused Champions League final tickets
Spanish giants returned 1,000 tickets for tomorrow’s final in Kiev after fans balked at the cost of getting to the city
UEFA chiefs have refused to sell Real Madrid’s unwanted Champions League Final tickets to Liverpool fans on safety ground.
The Spanish giants returned 1,000 tickets for tomorrow’s final in Kiev after fans balked at the cost and difficulty in getting to the city.
But while thousands of ticket-less Liverpool fans are descending on the Ukrainian capital, Uefa will instead sell the returned tickets to local fans and cancel any sold on the black market.
Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin said: "Unfortunately security reasons prevent us from selling these tickets to Liverpool. It would be too much of a risk.”
While the Olympic Stadium has a capacity of more than 70,000, the two clubs were allocated just 17,000 tickets each.
Ceferin maintained: “We have a good and fair distribution system. We distribute more than 70 percent of tickets to football fans and on the black market we have a system in place to stop tickets being sold.
"It's a big problem that we know about. We cancelled tickets that were on the black market.
“We are trying to do as much as possible. There are still people selling tickets and we are looking to correct that."
REDS MISSED Liverpool fans stranded as three flights due to take them to Kiev for Champions League final are cancelled
It comes as more than 1,000 Liverpool fans who thought they were heading to Kiev discovered they would be left stranded at home after their flights were cancelled.
Supporters had paid more than £1,000 for their tickets but operator Worldchoice Sports said it could not secure landing slots at Kiev's Boryspil Airport for three planes.
