The defender, 29, has rejected a contract offer from Tottenham worth £120,000 a week – more than double his current £50k-a-week pay packet.

And Jose Mourinho wants to rival Chelsea to bring in the Belgian, who joined from Atletico Madrid for £11.5m, as one of the four defenders he has targeted.

United are  confident of doing a deal around the £40million mark, with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona also interested.

The Red Devils are also willing to offer Alderweireld a contract that will take him into his mid-thirties – something Spurs are unwilling to do.
