John Motson gets gift from Roy Hodgson after commentator’s last game at Crystal Palace
Eagles boss Hodgson made sure Motty remembered the occasion with a microphone-shaped trophy and framed momento
JOHN MOTSON was handed a special gift by Roy Hodgson after his legendary commentary career came to an end this afternoon.
The popular Match Of The Day pundit has decided to pack away his microphone after 50 years at the BBC.
And Motson’s final game was at Selhurst Park for Crystal Palace’s clash against relegated West Brom.
The home side won 2-0 thanks to late goals from Wilfried Zaha and Patrick van Aanholt.
But Eagles boss Hodgson made sure that Motson was not forgotten about as he handed the commentator a microphone-shaped trophy and framed momento to celebrate the occasion.
Motty was delighted with his accolade, saying: “It’s been a fantastic day. I’ve always had a nice reception at Selhurst Park but today has been terrific.
“I’ve had people running up to me for autographs. I’ve had a great reception everywhere this season but I’ve not been received with quite the enthusiasm I’ve had today.”
Motson will later be presented with the Special Award at the TV Baftas this evening, and the pundit added: “I’m truly humbled the BBC is dedicating such a special evening to me.

“I’ve been very lucky to have witnessed some incredibly special moments in football and I look forward to sitting down with my family, and many football fans in the country, to look back on the past 50 years.
“I just thought my 50th years in the BBC is 2018 and it has to end some time and I thought that would be a good note to go out on.”
