Everton line up swoop for Arsenal target Patrick Vieira as new boss to take over from Sam Allardyce, according to reports

EVERTON want to make Patrick Vieira their new boss, according to reports.

The Arsenal legend, who is currently boss of New York City FC, has been heavily touted as a potential replacement for departing Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.

But the claims the Toffees could move for the Frenchman first.

Vieira, 41, has been in charge of the MLS side since 2016 and has impressed in his first foray into management.

He would replace the vastly more experienced Sam Allardyce at Goodison, with the former England chief expected to be axed by owner Farhad Moshiri this summer.

Allardyce, 63, was appointed in November after Everton’s disastrous start to the season and has led his side comfortably clear of the relegation battle.

Yet his style of football has failed to impress Moshiri or fans – who were bizarrely sent a survey last month asking if they “have a high level of trust” in the marmite manager.

It is understood Moshiri would rather appoint a younger coach, and Vieira would fit the bill.

The three-time Premier League winner has been earmarked for a long-term senior position within the City Football Group, who also own Manchester City.

He a year remaining on his current deal in New York and it is unclear whether he would be released should he be approached by another Prem club.

Vieira last month admitted he was flattered by the attention from European clubs.

He said: “I still have, of course, next year. It is going to be my contract at least until the end of the season and then after that, anything can happen.

“When your name is linked with big teams in Europe, it’s good. That shows that people are following what you are doing and you are doing a good job.”
