Fans of both clubs had to be separated by the police, as they taunted each other in a tense stand-off.

It was the United fans who let off the red flares, as they looked to stake their claim on the ground against the club who have home advantage.

Spurs supporters have become accustomed to Wembley outings recently, as they play their home games at the Home of Football as they wait for their new ground to be completed.

While they also reached the last four of the FA Cup last season, where they were knocked out against London rivals Chelsea in a thrilling 4-2 defeat.

And it was Mauricio Pochettino's men who took the lead against the Red Devils, as Dele Alli tapped home from close range after getting on the end of a Christian Eriksen cross.

But Jose Mourinho's side hit back in the 24th minute, as former Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez found the far corner with a brilliant header following a Paul Pogba delivery.

Ander Herrera scored what proved to be the winner on the hour mark to book United's spot in the semi-final.
