Black Cats Declawed

Sunderland relegated to League One just a single season after dropping to Championship from Premier League

Chris Coleman men suffer back-to-back relegations after a 2-1 defeat to Burton at the Stadium of Light on Saturday

SUNDERLAND have suffered a humiliating relegation to League One – just a single season after being demoted from the Premier League to the Championship.

Chris Coleman’s men suffered a controversial 2-1 defeat to Burton at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

All was looking well for the Black Cats when Paddy McNair put them ahead ten minutes before half-time.

But Burton pulled one back through former Sunderland striker Darren Bent in the 86th minute.

And the visitors then took a shock lead in the 92nd minute thanks to a header from Liam Boyce.

Sunderland were then left outraged when McNair equalised moments later before having it ruled out for handball.

The result means Sunderland are four points behind Burton and Barnsley, and six off Bolton.

Burton and Bolton are still to play each other, meaning that no matter the result in that clash, it will still leave the Black Cats short of surviving the drop.

Sunderland are said to be in £110million-worth of debt, with owner Ellis Short looking to sell as quickly as possible.

But with Coleman’s future now looking uncertain after just two home wins since his arrival in November, things could be getting a lot worse before they get better.
