And Bayern fans' worst fears were realised as boss Jupp Heynckes confirmed he needs minor surgery.

Speaking ahead of the German Cup semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen, he explained: "Arturo had a trip without any contact from anyone else.

"He has a loose body in the knee joint. He needs a small procedure and will be out for the time being.

"He's a fighter. I'm confident for his recovery."

The news is a devastating blow for Bayern, who are still fighting on three fronts this season.

Having wrapped up the Bundesliga title, they are one match away from the German Cup final, and face the prospect of a fourth domestic double in six seasons.

However, the Champions League is the trophy the covet the most, and losing Vidal for the double header against Real Madrid would be a huge blow.

The former Juventus man showed his importance when the two sides met last season, with a goal in the first leg, and his red card in the return prompted a collapse.

After the semi-final draw pitted the Germans against Los Blancos, Vidal tweeted his thirst for revenge.
