The inevitable was finally confirmed on Sunday when Jay Rodriguez stunned Old Trafford to score the only goal in West Brom's win over noisy neighbours United.

Instead on watching the game on the box, the Spaniard decided to take his mind off matters and spend his afternoon on the course with his son.

Even he wouldn't have expected the Premier League's bottom side to pull off a victory one week after United beat the champions.

But the news of Man City's win would have quickly filtered to the ears of Guardiola who will no doubt be celebrating this evening.

He told Man City's official website: "“It’s incredible the way we played and I am so glad to be here and be part of this club.

“These guys are fantastic, awesome - they are incredible. This club is absolutely amazing in all terms."

Guardiola, 47, has endured a frustrating couple of weeks after watching his side crash out of the Champions League.

But he could afford a wry smile after City were crowned champions of England for the fifth time in their history, having won the Football League in 1937 and 1968.

City have dominated the domestic season, losing just one league game against Liverpool in January, and remain on course to break Chelsea's points record of 95 in 2004-05.

And unlike their first Premier League triumph courtesy of the dramatic Sergio Aguero last-gasp winner in 2012, this was achieved while the City players were relaxed on a day off.

Captain Vincent Kompany wasted little time taking to Twitter to share his delight.

He wrote: "Champions!!!!! What a great feeling!! So happy to be able to share another trophy with our amazing fans."

Though City have failed in their attempt to win an unprecedented quadruple this season, it has still been a campaign of huge success.

They won the first trophy of the Guardiola era when they lifted the Carabao Cup by beating Arsenal.
