Mourinho, who signed a deal until 2020 in January, knows some at the club question if he is the right man going forward, but Woodward will show owners the Glazers he backs the man he hired.

Mourinho’s targets include Napoli’s Jorginho, Juventus’ Alex Sandro, Spurs duo Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld, Celtic’s Kieran Tierney and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin.

Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian are set to be dumped with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also under threat.

However, United have no plans to sign a new striker despite losing veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
