Scolari had a five-year spell as Portugal coach — with Ronaldo as key man.

‘Big Phil’ said: “He has asked me more than once what life in China is like.

“He asked me what it’s like to live in China, I gave him all the details.”

Scolari, 69, spent two years coaching Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande.

He added: “We also have to understand that Ronaldo has brands, there’s an industry, China is the biggest country in the world.

“Then I told him what I always say. Whoever has this opportunity has to go to China.”

Scolari was speaking at the Portuguese football awards - where Ronaldo was, unsurprisingly, named Portuguese player of the year.

The Quinas de Ouro is only three years old and Ronaldo has won the gong every year.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was also handed an award, for "his work and his role as Portugal's ambassador for excellence".

"2017 was a great year, again, both personally and collectively, we had a difficult qualifying phase, we lost the first game, [but] we were able to get back .

"An unforgettable year at Real Madrid, a historic year with five trophies, full of emotions, with my fifth Ballon d'Or and second Fifa [The Best] trophy, thanks to my family and my four children.

"Thanks to the [Portuguese FA] for this gala, I think we deserved it."
