CHARLIE ADAM added to the despair around the bet365 Stadium after the Stoke midfielder received a straight red card for a tackle on Wayne Rooney.
With the Potters ground engulfed in a blanket of snow, both Paul Lambert's side and Everton were troubled by the icy conditions in an uneventful first half.
Both sets of players were struggling with their footing, as neither club was able to get a foothold of the match.
Theo Walcott and Peter Crouch spurned the best chances of the opening 45 minutes before the biggest talking point of the match.
Adam was shown a straight red card by referee Martin Atkinson in the 30th minute after fouling the former Manchester United star.
Both men went for the ball in a 50/50 challenge, but Adam got to the ball late with his studs following through on the ankle of England's all-time record goalscorer.
There could have been arguments that the foul should have warranted a yellow card, but Adam was shown his marching orders on his first start since the 0-0 draw with Watford on January 31.
Stoke started the day off in 19th spot, knowing a win would see them leapfrog Southampton into 18th place.
Everton are looking to join Leicester on 40 points with a win, in what would be only their third away victory in 18 months.
