Birmingham to name Garry Monk as boss after sacking Steve Cotterill
Championship strugglers turn to axed Middlesbrough chief and his old sidekick Pep Clotet who was sacked by Oxford
GARRY MONK will be back in management with Birmingham City after the axing of Steve Cotterill.
Monk and sidekick Pep Clotet are getting the call just weeks after losing their own jobs at Middlesbrough and Oxford.
The pairing were successful at Leeds and Birmingham’s owners hope they can pick up, ironically starting against Boro on Tuesday.
Monk has been chasing a return since he was axed while Spaniard Clotet is also willing to go back in tandem with him. James Beattie will also be part of the team.
Cotterill was backed by the owners when they flew in last week but he needed a result at Nottingham Forest yesterday. And his side lost.
The Blues chief and his staff were summoned to the training ground immediately after the game to learn their fate.
Lee Carsley and Paul Williams are also leaving the first team management squad and their futures will be finalised this week.
Carsley was seen as a possible replacement but he is not keen to go into the hot seat at this time in his career and life.
Monk exited Boro on December 23 just after they pulled off a 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield Wednesday to leave them minth.
Successor Tony Pulis has lifted them to seventh as they bid for an instant return to the Premier League.
