UNAI Emery hinted Neymar still had a chance to face Real Madrid before deciding to undergo and operation.
The Brazilian suffered a fractured metatarsal during the 3-0 Ligue 1 victory over Marseille, which put his availability for the Champions League blockbuster in doubt.
However, his decision to undergo an operation categorically ruled him out of the tie.
And Emery insisted he could have played, had he taken a different decision: "On Sunday, it just seemed to be a twisted ankle.
"After the scan, with the club and Brazil doctors, we found a break.
"It was something else and we decided he should be operated, having seen the injury and speaking to the doctors in Brazil.

"It is a difficult decision because he had a ten per cent chance of playing, according to the doctor on Tuesday.
"He told me there was still an option before the new medical exams we had today.
