FINALLY, former wonderkid Freddy Adu has written his name into the history books... well sort of.

The American was hailed as the brightest talent in the world after making his debut for DC United aged just 14.

But things have just not gone to plan for Adu in his attempts to reach the top.

And after years treading through football's backwaters across the globe, he now finds himself back Stateside playing in Sin City.

And 14 years after his maiden bow he came off the bench to debut for new side Las Vegas Lights against his first club.

It took just a few moments for him to make his mark, and write himself a little piece of history.

Adu provided the ammunition for team-mate Angel Garduno to score - and thus recording the first-ever assist in the newly-formed Lights' history.

All three of the club's goals so far in pre-season have come from dead-ball situations - two penalties and one direct from a free-kick.

Adu, now playing for the 13th side in his career, was last spotted playing alongside ex-Chelsea and Liverpool ace Joe Cole for Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2016.

But he appears to have rediscovered his passion for football judging by a recent tweet.

He wrote: "Have made a decision to start fresh after a year away from soccer.

"This decision is solely based on the fact that I want to play as much as possible this year then move forward from there. Have discovered my love for the sport again. News soon!"

Adu left DC United for Real Salt Lake before Benfica brought him to Europe in 2007.

Loan spells with Monaco, Belenenses, Aris and Caykur Rizespor followed prior to a permanent switch to Philadelphia Union for a two-year stint from 2013.

But two seasons later he set off a series of disappointing moves that failed to reignite his career, playing for Bahia, Jagodina, KuPS and then Tampa before he chose to take a break from the game.

Las Vegas Lights will be hoping that the 28-year-old can produce some magic for them in the upcoming United Soccer League campaigns.
