Lingard was the Old Trafford hero with his 13th goal of the season to take United back into second above Liverpool

MANCHESTER UNITED produced a tremendous comeback against Chelsea as Jose Mourinho got one over on Antonio Conte.

The two managers have been trading insults all season but this afternoon it was the players who they wanted to do the talking for them.

Jesse Lingard with the winner to see off Chelsea

The Red Devils did just that hitting back from Willian’s opener to win the game with goals from Romelu Lukaku and substitute Jesse Lingard.

United will have been pleased to get to half time on level terms with Chelsea far the better side.

Indeed the Champions rattled the woodwork after only four minutes.

Marcos Alonso had driven the ball into the box and Alvaro Morata caught it first time beating David De Gea but hitting the bar.

Eden Hazard was on to the follow up and his header was tipped over by David De Gea.

The home crowd began to grow frustrated as they waited United’s first real chance and it finally came on 28 minutes.

Anthony Martial provided the perfect square ball for Alexis Sanchez and while the situation begged a first time strike he instead took a touch, lost his footing and scuffed his shot as Antonio Rudiger closed in.

It was from more United pressure that Chelsea actually broke and got their goal and what a superb individual moment it was for Willian.

He first won a header inside his own box then broke away and fed Hazard.

He continued his run while Hazard held the ball up, turned and rolled it back into his team-mate’s path.

Willian did not break stride as he sized up his options and thrashed a shot past De Gea.

It was a rare occasion that you wondered if the United goalkeeper could have done better, so close was the ball to his body as it fizzed past him.

It was an unusual off day for De Gea who also spilled two low shots he would normally gather in his sleep although no damage was done.

Damage was instead done to Chelsea when United crafted a superb equaliser on 39 minutes.

It was a throwback to better days here as the ball zipped at speed between four players before finding the net.

Lukaku worked to win a header back to Nemanja Matic and in a blur the ball went to the feet of Alexis Sanchez, Martial and back to Lukaku who finished low to the near bottom corner.

His 22nd of the season but first since joining United against one of the top six sides.

United were a much better side second-half and scored what proved to be the winner with 15 minutes.

It came from the head of Jesse Lingard but owed much to the usual selfless work from Lukaku.

He chased a ball down the right flank, controlled it, cut back and delivered a sweet in-swinging cross that Lingard leapt to meet and power a header past Thibaut Courtois.

Lingard had only been on the pitch 11 minutes but this is a player who always adds energy to a United side.

This was his 13th goal of the season.

Mourinho remained impassive as he had been for the first goal.
